For the last 10 years, Rob Shetterly, a Maine artist, writer and activist, has been painting portraits of Americans, past and present, who have had the courage to voice their dissent and actively work for justice. Mr. Shetterly is passionate about talking to children and adults about the importance of speaking up in a democracy. His growing portrait collection has been exhibited all around the country in various venues. Portraits from his collection were exhibited in Asheville in 2015 when his portrait of Dr. Rev. William Barber, II was unveiled, and more recently in 2017 at the YMI. We are thankful to Ellie Richard of Education for Engaged Citizens who makes the prints of Rob’s work available to schools and organizations throughout the Asheville area for educational purposes.
