The New Start Program

Womansong logo

Womansong’s New Start Program (NSP) has been helping women in transition make a new start in their lives. The NSP fund, begun in 1987, is intended to “fill in the gap” when other short-term funding options are not available. Womansong’s New Start Program received Asheville’s Community of Kindness Award in 2005.

Candidates for an NSP grant are referred to us by local social service agencies. Each candidate has been screened for eligibility by a case manager. This one-time grant is available for the amount of need up to $250.00.

NSP grant requests are as diverse as the women receiving them. To date, monies have been used to purchase bus tickets for a family escaping domestic violence, for rent or utility deposits, for professional licensing or certification exam fees, or for wardrobe items needed for job interviews. The NSP has typically been a needed support on the individual’s path toward greater self-sufficiency.

In 2006 Womansong began the New Start Scholarship that provides up to $500.00 to a woman who plans to make her new start through formal education or training. We provide at least one scholarship yearly.

The New Start Program and Scholarship funding comes from proceeds from each of our concerts, from Womansong fundraisers and from the generosity of folks like you! All NSP contributions are tax-deductible because 100% of all NSP designated contributions go directly to women in need.

All donations made to the New Start Program are tax-deductible.

"You are very considerate for tracking me down to ask about my New Start donation. Sue Daniels was the name of the person I wrote on the tribute card, but I didn't write her address. The concert occurred on the anniversary of her death. She died tragically and brutally as a result of domestic violence. Sue was a young, brilliant, highly educated scientist (conservation biology) and community activist. Ironically, domestic abuse was one of the many causes she fought against. Anyway, Sue would have liked to know that the donation I placed in the bucket will help someone else get a new chance in life. Thanks for your good work, beautiful music, and considerate follow through." - L.W.
