Womansong: 25 Years of Song
General description:
Womansong is Asheville's oldest and largest women's community chorus. Womansong performances are known for their high energy, pure entertainment and unusual variety. The chorus’s eclectic repertoire includes songs from around the world as well as our own backyard – several pieces composed by Womansong members. Lively accompaniment is provided by a variety of instrumentalists along with dancing and drumming. Womansong’s music and community efforts are grounded in the common spirit of women working and singing together. The chorus proclaims unity and honors cultural diversity with songs that celebrate many themes in women’s lives – empowerment, spirituality, healing and humor. Womansong to Perform at Unity Center Asheville, NC April 23, 2013 – Womansong, Asheville’s oldest and largest women’s community chorus, is happy to announce its first concert of 2013: “I Got the Music in Me,” Friday, June 7th and Saturday, June 8th, 7:30p.m. at Unity Center, 2041 Old Fanning Bridge Road, Mills River, NC (www.unitync.net).
Combining humor, harmony and colorful visuals, this fun evening will feature favorite songs from the 1960’s and ’70’s with selections by songwriters
Carole King, Holly Near, Laura Nyro, Helen Reddy, Cris Williamson, John Lennon, and Paul Simon. The program includes sweet songs celebrating friendship and support; high-energy, gospel-influenced pieces; and two original songs composed by chorus members. Several Womansong ensembles and soloists will perform as well.
Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at the door, $5 for children under 12 and will be available online at www.womansong.org, by phone from the Unity Center 828-891-8700 (Visa/MC) and from Womansong members.
Womansong is a vibrant choral village of 70 women directed by Deborah Nordeen, with assistant directors Althea Gonzalez and Sarah Rubin. Songs
are signed by music sign language interpreter Shiner Antiorio. Womansong celebrates the unity, diversity and empowerment of women through musical expression and promotes social change through its New Start Program, which offers community college scholarships and provides emergency
assistance to fill gaps for women in need. Womansong’s efforts are founded in the common spirit of women working and singing together.
Concert proceeds will benefit Womansong, its New Start Program and Unity’s Kindness Fund.
