Applying for a Grant
To apply for a New Start Program grant, please send an email addressing the questions below and outlining your candidates' needs to: womansongnewstartfund@hotmail.com.
The request is considered by the chair and when appropriate, forwarded to the NSP granting committee for approval. This steps helps protect Womansong's non-profit status and ensures that there is no conflict of interest in fund distribution.
The approval process generally takes 24 to 48 hours after receipt of your request, unless more information is needed.
If your grant request is approved, a check is written and mailed to your agency or vendor. In emergency situations, arrangements can be made for check pick up or delivery.

Questions to Address
- Has the applicant/client every received a New Start Program grant in the past?
- Does the client currently reside in Western North Carolina?
- The New Start Program is a "last resort" fund. We ask that all other sources of funding be explored before submitting request. What other local agencies have been contacted for assistance?
- If you've never applied for a grant from the NSP below, please tell us about your agency and your role in the client's situation.
- Is the client making behavioral changes and does she have in place specific plans for a "new start" in her life? Outlining who/what agency will continue to help monitor the client's progress in the future will help in answering this question.
- New Start grants are not intended for use as a "stop gap" measure. We ask that a woman be ready to sustain her New Start before applying for a grant. Does the individual have the necessary support in place so she will be able to sustain her new start. Please outline this support.
- One-time grants (per recipient) are available for the amount of need up to $500.00. Please ensure that you indicate the correct total amount you are requesting in your email.
PLEASE NOTE:
- Candidates for an NSP grant are referred to us by local WNC social service agencies. Each candidate will need to be screened for eligibility by a case manager, social worker based on the guidelines below. We do not accept requests from individuals.
- Checks are not made out to the individual recipient, but made payable directly to the appropriate venfor. Grants may also be requested for education, training or books and supplies that help an individual become more employable.
- While we request client names for our records, these names are kept in strict conficence.
- We do not provide grants to cover medical expenses or health care.
