Dear Supporters of Womansong,
Womansong continues to regain its strength. After 35 years of singing and engaging in the community, we won’t be stopped! Since our first live post-COVID concert “Music in the Air” in May, our performing membership is re-growing and we are happily preparing for our fall concert, “Rise Up!” We are indebted to all of you, our wonderful fans, for keeping our mission alive for the past 35 years —but especially the past 2 years. We love our audiences and we love to perform for you.

Our fall concert, under the direction of our new Artistic Director, Allison Thorpe, who is also the Director of Choral Activities and Associate Professor of Music at Western Carolina University, will focus on songs about the strength of women, individually and collectively, to address social justice issues and build community.  It includes new songs by our own Lytingale (Together We Can Change the World)   and Martha Burrows (I Am the Expert),   along with favorites by The Righteous Mothers, Kacey Musgraves, Rosephanye Powell, and the Wailin’ Jennys.

The concert performances will be on Nov 18th at 7:30 and Nov 19th at 3:00 at the UUCA, 1 Edwin Place, Asheville. After Saturday’s performance, you will have the opportunity to meet Allison at a post-concert reception. Tickets will be available online (starting at 8:00am on October 14.)

WHAT ELSE HAVE WE  BEEN UP TO?
We recently sang at the celebration event commemorating the reconstruction of the   Mars Hill Rosenwald School, an elementary school built in 1928 serving Black children from Mars Hill, Marshall and Hot Springs. The school was one of 5,000 schools funded through the shared vision of Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald to improve the education of Black children in the South. The event was held on the campus of Mars Hill University, and included a tour of the school and speeches by descendants of Washington and Rosenwald.

Womansong has also been invited to sing at an important voter rights event in Asheville on October 22nd, sponsored by  BluePrint NC.  Rev. William Barber II of the Poor People’s Campaign will be the featured presenter and will speak about the importance and obligation that each of us has to vote and to help others vote.... very much in line with our song, “My Vote, My Voice, My Right”.

We are honored and grateful to be asked to sing at community events such as these. They provide us opportunities to bring alive Womansong’s mission of   Singing Together for Joy, Social Justice and Community . Combined with our on-going New Start Fund assistance to women in our community,  Womansong’s presence in the community remains vibrant.

It is you, our supporters, who help make this possible.

Please support us by donating to help us carry our mission of joy, social justice and community into the future.
We are deeply appreciative of your continued encouragement and support in all ways.

Our 2022-23 fundraising goal is $20,000.
